Guest Artist ProgramOne of our aims at Visions and Rainbows is to present to the Australian and world public self-taught and ‘outsider’ artists form Australia and elsewhere. Some of these may have achieved recognition but, in the main, their works are not to be found within the mainstream of local art and in the current art climate are unlikely to find a place there. Opening Exhibition (August 2004) - Ian PyperIn August 2004 our guest artist program welcomes as its first participant internationally known self-taught artist from England, Ian Pyper, whose work I first saw at first hand when he was one of the artists incuded in John Maizels' specially curated section of the 7th International Festival d'Art Singulier at Roquevaire - Aubagne in 2000. Ian's intuitive, repeated use of distinctive and evocative totemic forms serves to create in the viewer a profoundly meditative response. At times whimsical or ironic, at times powerful and pungent, Ian's drawings are always thought provoking and have won him a world-wide following. New Exhibition (December 2004) - Aline Laurence GirardI first encountered Aline's wonderful sculptures in October 2000 when we were both participants in the 7th International Festival d'Art Singulier, Roquevaire-Aubagne, Provence. We met and became close friends with Aline and her partner Véronique Duhaut, a talented photographer, and have remained so ever since. Circumstances prevented Aline from being my first guest artist on the web site, so it gives me the greatest pleasure finally to be able to bring you this exhibition of her very individual mixed media sculpture. Aline says of her work ..... "C'est un travail qui a longuement germé et pris racine en mon for intérieur, s'est déployé en plusieurs branches, en plusieurs dimensions. Par la grâce naturelle des matériaux les plus nobles et pauvres à la fois, trouvés en chemin, collectés au fil du temps, façonnés par petites séries en pièces uniques.
English Translation" The seeds of my art have germinated slowly over a lifetime, taking root in my heart of hearts and branching out in several directions - several dimensions … through the natural grace of both the noblest and poorest of materials, found by the way, gathered with the passing of time , shaped in short series of single pieces. "In a search not for decoration but for a sculptural and pictorial language that would touch everyone in their "intact depths of humanity" **. A subversive attempt, through the expressive and symbolic force of the very materials themselves and a given representation, to provoke in the viewer emotions, questionings and thoughts about ( life's essentials / what is essential). "To remind ourselves - seemingly so cruel - that we are nevertheless tender and fragile." ** cf. Jean Rostand
Future ExhibitionsOver the coming months and years we hope to build up an exciting profile of ‘outsider’ art in Australia, at the same time opening a new door of self-discovery and fulfilment for many young and not so young artists. Follow the links on an exciting visual journey to meet them and explore their work. Note: If you would like to be considered for inclusion in the Guest Artist Program visit the Contact Details page to find out how you can register your interest.
